Straps are an integral part of bagmaking, so make sure to devote time to making them!
Depending on your sewing machine, you may need to limit or reduce your strap layers. This guide includes some tips and tricks for reducing the bulk, especially when you need to fold the ends around hardware.
Included are ideas for strap construction, as well as ideas for concealing raw strap ends. I use these methods to combat thick straps that are difficult to work with, and to avoid raw edges for vinyls/ leathers that don’t have presentable undersides.
This guide does not include pattern pieces for cutting. It lists recommendations for dimensions, depending on the strap style you choose to make. It includes the measurements I like to use for crossbody, backpack, shoulder, and hand bags. You can take these measurements and adjust them for any bag you are making.
This is a PDF FILE for download only. You will not receive a finished product.
You will need a PDF reader such as Acrobat Reader or Preview to open the file. The pattern pieces must be printed at 100%, so will need to be printed from a computer or a mobile app that allows you to select 100% scaling.
